Jijel town: history by the sea
Ancient Igilgili: a port, markets, town beaches and a history going back to the Phoenicians.
Jijel town is the provincial capital and its gateway. Known in antiquity as Igilgili, it was founded by the Phoenicians and later passed to the Carthaginians, Romans, Vandals and Byzantines, before becoming a base of the Barbarossa brothers in the 16th century.
