Beni Belaid lake and beach
A Ramsar-listed nature reserve: a lake, rare birds and a wide beach a few steps away, east of Jijel.
In the east of Jijel province, the Beni Belaid lake nature reserve has been a wetland of international importance under the Ramsar Convention since 2003. It covers about 600 hectares around a small lake close to the sea.
For nature lovers
- The lake shelters rare birds such as the ferruginous duck and the purple swamphen.
- Otters and many dragonflies live here too.
- Sunset over the lake is a quiet, special moment.
For families
The nearby beach is wide and calm, away from the busy town beaches: ideal for a relaxed family day.
Visit responsibly
- Stay on paths and keep away from nesting areas.
- Leave no rubbish: the wetland is fragile.
- Use binoculars instead of getting close to the birds.
Stay in Kheiri Oued Adjoul or Sidi Abdelaziz to be close to the lake and the beach.
